In fact, there are almost just as many types of cable ties as there are uses for them. Some ties are designed to be used outdoors, while others resist industrial chemicals and irritants, as well as flame and high temperatures. For high chemical resistance, fluoropolymer cable ties are your best bet. Strong carbon-fluorine bonds reduce degradation by most industrial solvents, acids, and bases. These ties also resist moisture and have a wide operating temperature range, -50°F to 302°F (-46°C to 150°C) to be exact. These ties are a great option when chemical exposure is a constant, such as chemical plants, manufacturing, and aerospace applications. However, it is important to note that fluoropolymer bases are not as strong as traditional nylon. They will be more susceptible to slipping and mechanical failure. These ties come in a distinct aqua blue color, so you will be able to quickly recognize these ties, which are produced under the Tefzel® name. Looking for heat and flame resistance? Halar® cable ties have a low smoke density and meet U.L. 94V-0 flame specifications. These ties are also constructed with fluoropolymers.
If Halar® ties were to catch fire, they would release little smoke upon burning, drastically reducing the amount of chemical toxins released. They meet NEC recommendations for use in air handling spaces, and thus, these ties are the perfect choice for plenum spaces. Use these ties for HVAC work, as well as bundling cable assemblies in building walls. Look for a distinctive maroon color, which assures you have the right tie!
Lastly, cable ties made with polypropene utilize this thermoplastic polymer for protection from chemical damage, such as when exposed to salts, bases, and acids. In addition, these polypropene ties are offered in a weather resistant variant; the bonds are specially engineered to resist UV radiation, drastically increasing the tie’s lifespan in outdoor applications. For outdoor use, such as solar and wind power or shipping and cargo, these ties are more than up to the task. These weather resistant ties will be black, while traditional polypropene ties are a distinctive light green.
